Baby Wearing/Slings

Posted on: March 29, 2010

Despite recent warnings about certain baby carriers, many health professionals and mothers who use slings believe then to be a healthy and safe option.  See my earlier blog https://midwifevalerie.wordpress.com/2008/12/21/baby-wearing/

This said, Infantino is voluntarily recalling/replacing Infantino SlingRider and Wendy Bellissimo infant baby carriers.  The American Consumer Product Safety Commission said babies could suffocate in the soft fabric slings and recommended that this particular type of sling should not be used for babies under 4 months and that particular care should be used with babies who had a low birth weight, were born prematurely or had breathing problems such as colds; it particularly mentioned slings where the baby is cradled in a curved or “C-like” position, nestling the baby below the mother’s chest or near her belly.

However, slings have been used worldwide as a way to calm and nurture babies and for nursing mothers to breastfeed in the sling whilst leaving their hands free to work or care for other children, so please do treat this scare with caution.
